TO INVESTIGATE THIS MECHANISM, Liang-Chun Wang of the University of Maryland, College Park, and colleagues NEEDED to develop AN ALTERNATIVE TO the MOUSE MODELS normally used to study gonorrhea, since they have been inadequate for this purpose. The team developed a NEW MODEL using tissue samples obtained from the human endocervix. The RESEARCHERS INFECTED the ENDOCERVIX TISSUE, AS WELL AS LAB-GROWN CELLS OF the SAME TYPE as those that line the endocervix, with N. gonorrhoeae. CRITERIA FOR DIAGNOSIS OF PI The clinical criteria for diagnosing pelvic inflammatory disease are as follows. MINIMUM CRITERIA : Any of these three criteria diagnose PID if no other cause can be found. 1.Uterine tenderness :Lower abdominal pain. 2.Adnexal tenderness:pain /tenderness when ovaries or fallopian tubes are touched or moved during examination. 3.Cervical movement tenderness:pain or tenderness when cervix is moved or touched during examination. ADDITIONAL CRITERIA THAT INCREASE THE LIKELIHOOD OF PID: 1.Abnormal green /yellow colored vaginal or cervical secretions. 2.Laboratory documentation of Neisseria gonorrhea or chlamydia . 3.Oral temperature of >>38°cor higher. 4.Presence of WBCs on saline microscopy of vaginal secretions. 5.Raised ESR. 6.Raised CRP. DEFINITIVE CRITERIA: 1.Endometrial biopsy with histopathological evidence of endometritis. 2.Transvaginal sonography / MRI showing thickened,fluid filled tubes-hydrosalpinx. free fluid in pelvis. Tubo-ovarian complex. 3.Doppler studies suggesting pelvic infection (tubal hyperaemia). 4.Laparoscopic abnormalities consistent with PID. Dont jump into conclusions of PID by just seeing free fluid in pelvis.Becoz it is a nonspecific finding. Take detailed history especially of sexual promiscuity and look for the above criteria.

Pelvic inflammatory disease treatment Pelvic inflammatory disease treatment aims to lessen the inflammatory process thereby arresting the development of the organisms resulting in the disease. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection of the reproductive organs in women. The pelvis is in the lower abdomen and includes the fallopian tubes, the ovaries, the cervix, and the uterus. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this condition is common and affects about 1 million women each year in the United States. Several different types of bacteria can cause PID, including the same bacteria that cause the sexually transmitted infections (STIs) gonorrhea and chlamydia. What commonly occurs is that bacteria first enter the vagina and cause an infection. As time passes, this infection can move into the pelvic organs. Risk factors for pelvic inflammatory disease Your risk of pelvic inflammatory disease increases if you have gonorrhea or chlamydia. However, you can develop PID without ever having an STI. Other factors that can cause pelvic inflammatory disease include: having sex and being under the age of 25 having sex with different people having sex without a condom using an intrauterine device (IUD) to prevent a pregnancy douching having a history of pelvic inflammatory disease Symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease Some women with pelvic inflammatory disease don’t have symptoms.
